Back in 2013, I started the featherweight training sessions in the Netherlands. These sessions received enthusiastic responses from fellow featherweights representing various BJJ Teams. Featherweights represent a smaller group within a BJJ Academy in comparison to heavier practitioners, so training with fellow featherweights offers several benefits:

  • Similar Size and Strength: Since featherweights have similar body sizes and strengths, training partners can provide more evenly matched sparring sessions, enhancing skill development without one partner overpowering the other.
  • Targeted Techniques: Featherweights often share similar techniques and strategies suited to their size, allowing for more focused and relevant training drills and discussions.
  • Enhanced Speed and Agility: Featherweights typically exhibit faster movements and agility compared to heavier training partners, enabling practitioners to refine their speed-based techniques and reactions.
  • Reduced Risk of Injury: With less weight disparity, there's a decreased risk of injury during training, as partners are less likely to apply excessive force unintentionally.

After over a decade, my aspiration became a reality: to establish Featherweight Camps where featherweights train alongside peers who share similar goals, challenges and support, leading to a more positive training environment and shared progress.
